Performance assessment of a power-to-gas process based on reversible solid oxide cell

Hanaâ Er-rbib, Nouaamane Kezibri, Chakib Bouallou

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2018, Volume 12, Issue 4,   Pages 697-707 doi: 10.1007/s11705-018-1774-z

Abstract:

Due to the foreseen growth of sustainable energy utilization in the upcoming years, storage of the excess production is becoming a rather serious matter. In this work, a promising solution to this issue is investigated using one of the most emerging technologies of electricity conversion: reversible solid oxide cells (RSOC). A detailed model was created so as to study the RSOC performance before implementing it in the global co-electrolysis Aspen PlusTM model. The model was compared to experimental results and showed good agreement with the available data under steady state conditions. The system was then scaled up to a 10 MW co-electrolysis unit operating at 1073 K and 3 bar. The produced syngas is subsequently directed to a methanation unit to produce a synthetic natural gas (SNG) with an equivalent chemical power of 8.3 MWth. Additionally, as a result of a heat integration analysis, the methanation process provides steam and electricity to operate the rest of the units in the process. A final CO2 capture step is added to ensure the required specifications of the produced SNG for gas network injection. Lastly, the overall performance of the power-to-gas process was evaluated taking into account the energy consumption of each unit.

Status and Prospect of Remanufacturing Technology for Tubing and Sucker Rods

He Liu,Tao Li,Wei-ye Han,Qiang Chen,Shou-zhi Huang,Er-yang Ming,Qiang Sun

Frontiers of Engineering Management 2016, Volume 3, Issue 3,   Pages 258-263 doi: 10.15302/J-FEM-2016031

Abstract: As the main consumables, huge amount of tubing and sucker rods are abandoned annually. The current remediation technology could only enable part of abandoned tubing and sucker rod to be reused in a degraded way, leading to a big resource waste. The production, use and remediation methods of tubing and sucker rod are analyzed here. Remanufacturing technology of abandoned tubing based on self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) is proposed. Economic, environmental and social benefits of large scale application of this technology are evaluated. And then various factors that restrict the popularization of remanufacturing technology in the petroleum industry are studied and suggestions are given in the end. The results indicate that unlike conventional remediation methods, remanufacturing technology can extend the service life of abandoned tubing to reach or even exceed that of a new one. Meanwhile it can also reduce the cost effectively, and achieve significant economic and social benefits. We should expand remanufacturing technology areas in the petroleum industry and achieve stable, healthy development in the low oil price situation. The scientific standards for remanufactured products should be enacted, and new management mode of the remanufactured products should be developed.

Type 2 diabetic patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease exhibit significant haemorheological abnormalities

Hui Dong, Fu’er Lu, Nan Wang, Xin Zou, Jingjing Rao

Frontiers of Medicine 2011, Volume 5, Issue 3,   Pages 288-293 doi: 10.1007/s11684-011-0127-9

Abstract: Haemorheological abnormalities have been described in diabetes mellitus, as well as in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the relationship between the changes in liver fat content and haemorheology is unknown. The current study aims to show the correlation between haemorheological parameters and intrahepatic lipid content (IHLC) in patients with type 2 diabetes. The serum biochemical markers, such as fasting plasma glucose (FPG), haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), liver enzymes, lipid profiles, and haemorheological properties, were examined. IHLC was quantified using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( H-MRS) scanning of the liver. A significant correlation was observed between IHLC and whole blood viscosity at high, middle, and low shear rates. IHLC also positively correlated with haematocrit, the reduced whole blood viscosity at low and middle shear rates, and the erythrocyte aggregation index. Diabetic patients with NAFLD exhibited significant haemorheological abnormalities compared with patients without NAFLD. In summary, haemorheological disorders are linked to non-alcoholic fatty liver in type 2 diabetes.

Anefficient data layout scheme for better I/O balancing inRAID-6 storage systems

Ping XIE,Jian-zhong HUANG,Er-wei DAI,Qiang CAO,Chang-sheng XIE

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2015, Volume 16, Issue 5,   Pages 335-345 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1400362

Abstract: Among redundant arrays of independent disks (RAID)-6 codes, maximum distance separable (MDS) based RAID-6 codes are popular because they have the optimal storage efficiency. Although vertical MDS codes exhibit better load balancing compared to horizontal MDS codes in partial stripes, an I/O unbalancing problem still exists in some vertical codes. To address this issue, we propose a novel efficient data layout, uniform P-code (UPC), to support highly balanced I/Os among P-coded disk arrays (i.e., PC). In UPC, the nonuniformly distributed information symbols in each parity chain of P-code are moved along their columns to other rows, thus enabling the parity chain to keep original parity relationships and tolerate double disk failures. The UPC scheme not only achieves optimal storage efficiency, computational complexity, and update complexity, but also supports better I/O balancing in the context of large-scale storage systems. We also conduct a performance study on reconstruction algorithms using an analytical model. Besides extensive theoretical analysis, comparative performance experiments are conducted by replaying real-world workloads under various configurations. Experimental results illustrate that our UPC scheme significantly outperforms the PC scheme in terms of average user response time. In particular, in the case of a 12-disk array, the UPC scheme can improve the access performance of the RAID-6 storage system by 29.9% compared to the PC scheme.

Frontiers of Medicine 2010, Volume 4, Issue 2,   Pages 185-191 doi: 10.1007/s11684-010-0040-7

Abstract: The factors affecting case detection of tuberculosis (TB)/human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) co-infection cases were explored in order to provide evidence-based formulation of a TB/HIV co-infection control strategy in China. Four counties with different modes of HIV transmission and varying cooperation mechanisms between TB and HIV institutions were selected. HIV test among TB patients and TB examination among people living with HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) were conducted. Patients also completed questionnaires on potential factors affecting TB/HIV co-infection. The results showed that 19 (1.7%) were HIV-positive among 1089 cases of people living with active TB who received HIV testing. Conversely, there were 126 (10%) cases of active TB among 1255 cases of people living with HIV/AIDS. Among the newly discovered 145 cases of TB/HIV co-infection, AIDS institutions found 86.9% of these co-infections and 14.1% came from TB institutes. In different registration categories, there were 31 (21.4%) cases of smear positive TB, 104 (71.7%) cases of smear negative TB, and extrapulmonary cases accounted for 10 (6.9%). Gender, occupation, marital status, ethnic group, education, HIV transmission route, CD4 level, and type of TB susceptible symptoms had significant effects on whether HIV/AIDS patients were co-infected with TB disease (<0.01). Sex, age, ethnic group, occupation, and type of tuberculosis had no significant influence on whether TB patients had HIV infection. AIDS institutions could find more TB/HIV co-infection patients in comparison with TB institutions, particularly in patients with smear negative pulmonary tuberculosis and extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Therefore, a cooperation mechanism should be built up between TB and HIV control systems, and routine TB checks should be conducted for HIV/AIDS patients. In areas where sex or drug use is the major transmission mode of HIV infection, antiretroviral therapy should be expanded, treatment adherence should be improved and patients’ immunity level should be increased in order to decrease TB incidence. Cough and expectoration of more than two weeks, bloody sputum, and recurrent fevers could be revealing symptoms in TB screening of HIV/AIDS patients.

Continuous-Flow Synthesis of the Nucleobase Unit of Remdesivir Article

Yongxing Guo, Minjie Liu, Meifen Jiang, Yuan Tao, Dang Cheng, Fen-Er Chen

Engineering 2023, Volume 21, Issue 2,   Pages 92-100 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2021.07.029

Abstract:

In this work, the nucleobase unit of the antiviral drug remdesivir, 7-bromopyrrolo[2,1-f][1,2,4]triazin-4-amine, was synthesized through five-step continuous flow. By adapting batch synthetic chemistry, 7-bromopyrrolo[2,1-f][1,2,4]triazin-4-amine was successfully produced through sequential flow operations from the widely available and inexpensive starting material pyrrole. Under optimal flow conditions, 7-bromopyrrolo[2,1-f][1,2,4]triazin-4-amine was obtained in 14.1% isolated yield in a total residence time of 79 min with a throughput of 2.96 g·h−1. The total residence time was significantly shorter than the total time consumed in batch procedures (> 26.5 h). In flow, the highly exothermic Vilsmeier–Haack and N-amination reactions involving hazardous and unstable intermediates, oxidative liquid–liquid biphasic transformation, and a bromination reaction requiring strict cryogenic conditions are favorably facilitated. The salient feature of this synthesis is that the workup procedures are fully integrated into the reaction sequences by deploying dedicated equipment and separation units, thus forming a streamlined continuous-flow system that maximizes the overall process efficiency. This method represents a greener and more sustainable process to prepare this nucleobase unit with high efficiency and safety.

The cooperation effect of Ni and Pt in the hydrogenation of acetic acid

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2022, Volume 16, Issue 3,   Pages 397-407 doi: 10.1007/s11705-021-2076-4

Abstract: The catalytic hydrogenation of carboxylic acid to alcohols is one of the important strategies for the conversion of biomass. Herein, a series of Ni-doped PtSn catalysts were prepared, characterized and studied in the hydrogenation of acetic acid. The Ni dopant has a strong interaction with Pt, which promotes the hydrogen adsorption, providing an activated hydrogen-rich environment for the hydrogenation. Meanwhile, the presence of Ni also improves the Pt dispersion, giving more accessible active sites for hydrogen activation. The cooperation of Pt and Ni significantly promotes the catalytic activity of the hydrogenation of acetic acid to ethanol. As a result, the catalyst with 0.1% Ni exhibits the best reaction activity, and its space time yield is twice as that of the PtSn/SiO2 catalyst. It provides a meaningful instruction on the catalyst design for the carboxylic acid hydrogenation.
